Seminar Discusses the Neurobiology of Sexual Assault
On October 29, 2012, the National Institute of Justice will host "The Neurobiology of Sexual Assault: Implications for First Responders in Law Enforcement, Prosecution, and Victim Advocacy." This free presentation by Rebecca Campbell, Ph.D., is designed for law enforcement, nurses, prosecutors, and advocates.

View Smart Policing Initiative Webinar
On September 24, 2012, Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) presented "The Problem-Solving Process (SARA) and SPI." The Bureau of Justice Assistance sponsored Webinar discussed SPI sites that described their problem-solving activities. These presentations described the problem that the site identified, how it was analyzed, the approach for addressing the problem, results to date, challenges faced, and advice they would give to others.

Study Finds Increase in Violent and Property Crime Rates
The Bureau of Justice Statistics report, Criminal Victimization, 2011, presents 2011 estimates of rates and levels of violent victimization (rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault) and property victimization (burglary, motor vehicle theft, and property theft) in the U.S.

Current Issue of BJA Newsletter Released
This issue of "Justice Today" features an article about Bureau of Justice Assistance Director O'Donnell announcing the FY 2012 Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grant Awards in Brooklyn, New York. It also includes articles about identifying emerging crime trends in law enforcement and the process of revising the performance measures for the Justice Assistance Grant Program.

Save the Date for LGBTI Populations Broadcast
On November 7, 2012, the National Institute of Corrections will host "LGBTI Populations - Their Safety, Your Responsibility." This live, 3-hour satellite/Internet broadcast is designed to increase awareness of strategies for developing policies and procedures for LGBTI populations. The broadcast will highlight promising practices by providing resources and examples of agencies that are responding to the needs of their LGBTI population.

The latest conversation with Dr. John Laub is available on The Director's Corner Web page. In this discussion, "Combining Intellectual Muscle: NIJ and the National Science Foundation Sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)," Dr. Laub discusses the impact the MOU will have on creating a comprehensive approach to reducing crime and promoting justice.
