Major Winter Storm Continues Across Central U.S.

A major winter storm will continue across much of the central U.S. on Thursday. Snow, heavy at times, will fall over much of the central Plains, with accumulations of more than a foot expected in some locations. Meanwhile, sleet and freezing rain are likely across parts of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. Farther to the south, the system will bring the threat of severe weather to the Gulf Coast.

Louis W. Uccellini selected as next director of NOAA’s National Weather Service

Louis W. Uccellini, Ph.D., will become the next assistant NOAA administrator for weather services beginning February 10 and the 16th director of NOAA’s National Weather Service, which marks its 143rd anniversary this Saturday.

NWS adds red tide alerts to Beach Hazards Statements

The National Weather Service has added a new service to alert the public when red tides threaten human health at Tampa Bay area beaches. The new alert is timely since many of southwest Florida’s beaches are experiencing or are under threat of red tide.

NWS recognizes 2,000th StormReady® Community

The National Weather Service recognized Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, in Texas, as the 2,000th StormReady® Community, during a ceremony held January 11. The recognition represents an important milestone for the StormReady program, which began when the NWS Tulsa, Okla., forecast office determined that lives and property could best be protected from hazardous weather when the entire “warning system” worked together.
