Black Studies: A Select Catalog of National Archives Microfilm Publications

SKU N-02-200011
This expanded edition of Black Studies describes a wealth of historical records for research in African American history and genealogy. Over 200 microfilm publications are listed—including 60 new or previously uncited series—that document the African American experience from the post-Revolutionary era to the early 20th century.

Among the new entries are field office records of the Freedmen’s Bureau, 1865–1872, and service records of the United States Colored Troops (Civil War), as well as relevant records from the Departments of Justice and Veterans Affairs, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Census Bureau.

Highlights of the new edition include —
  • Records of Freedmen’s Bureau assistant commissioners and staff officers in the Southern and Border states concerning relief, labor, medical care, education, marriages, race relations, and justice—most of high genealogical value
  • Freedmen’s Bureau letters and reports from field offices and the general public concerning election problems, race riots, violence against blacks, civil rights acts, arrests without due process, education, and other legal concerns in the Southern states
  • Muster rolls, enlistment papers, casualty sheets, discharge or disability certificates, correspondence, deeds of manumission, and other personal information from compiled military service records of the United States Colored Troops (USCT)
  • Supreme Court records of the landmark cases of the Amistad, 1841; Dred Scott v. Sanford, 1857; and Brown v. Board of Education, 1954
  • Letters and reports received by the National Board of Health, many concerning the black population, on topics of mortality rates, incidences of diseases, treatment programs, and demographics

The catalog also contains related records of the United States Senate, House of Representatives, District Courts of the United States, the Department of State, the U.S. Army Continental Commands, and several other government agencies.
