Polaris Project: For a World Without SlaveryWhy don't victims of sex trafficking leave their exploiters? Polaris Project's "In Their Shoes: Understanding Victims' Mindsets and Common Barriers to Victim Identification" explains the reasons. The list is meant to help service workers identify victims and understand what keeps them from escaping.

Reasons include

  • Not trusting law enforcement or service providers
  • Not thinking of themselves as victims
  • Being moved around a lot

An anti-trafficking nonprofit, Polaris Project also offers resources on how to help trafficked persons.
