OHS Leadership Award

Application Submission Deadline: 11:59 p.m. ET on March 1, 2013

Overview

The purpose of the Office of Head Start (OHS) Leadership Award is to recognize program leaders who promote the vision and mission of Head Start and Early Head Start. During the 1st OHS National Birth to Five Leadership Institute held in 2011, OHS recognized the architects of Head Start: Sargent Shriver, Edward Zigler, and T. Berry Brazelton for the path they forged. Leadership Awards are granted biennially at the Leadership Institute. Themes for the Award are chosen by the OHS Director.

2013 OHS Leadership Award

Yvette Sanchez Fuentes, Director of OHS, selected Effective Family Engagement as the theme for the 2013 OHS Leadership Award. This award will recognize programs as leaders in implementing an effective family engagement program goal that has resulted in positive outcomes for families and children.

There are two opportunities for programs to be recognized as leaders in family engagement: regionally and nationally. One program from each Region will be selected to receive a Regional Award. One of the 12 Regional awardees will be selected to receive the National Award at the Leadership Institute. All Regional Award recipients will be recognized at the Institute.

Information for Applicants

Head Start and Early Head Start programs are eligible to apply if they are in good standing and have not been designated to compete for continued funding from 2011 to 2013. Eligible Head Start and Early Head Start programs are encouraged to apply if they have met parent and family engagement requirements and can offer examples of using the Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (PFCE) Framework for program innovation.

Directions: Tell your family engagement story by describing the implementation of a family engagement program goal, how the continuous improvement process was used to determine effect of implementation on outcomes, and the role of leader(s). Please limit the application essay to 1,000 words and avoid using program and staff names in the narrative. Download essay instructions [PDF, 270KB].
