Public Health Social Media Directory

The Public Health Social Media Directory is a collaborative effort to catalog the social media tools used by government health agencies. We are interested in health departments at all levels—including county, city, state, and Federal—as well as governmental social media accounts established for health campaigns. The directory is meant primarily to foster peer learning in the public health community; however the directory is also possible resource for efforts aimed at analyzing the data and information shared in social media by public health agencies. Although the scope of this effort is limited to government-sponsored social media accounts, this directory could also serve as a starting point for efforts looking at the use of social media across the entire breadth of healthcare-including governmental, private sector and non-profit organizations.

To be successful, this effort requires the participation of everyone in the public health community to help verify the information presented in the directory. We are requesting that visitors confirm that your local health department is listed and that the information we have is accurate. The easiest way to find and verify that the information is correct is to filter the dataset to a state-level map and click on the geographical pin that represents your local health department. Clicking on the pin will display all currently listed accounts for a given agency. The flyout will also provide an email address to submit changes. When emailing us, please include the name of the organization or campaign, as well as your state, so that we can quickly locate the correct record to update. New York is presented below but you can create a map for any state. To do this, visit the full U.S. map, use the Filter menu to isolate facilities in your state, and zoom in to view those facilities.

The map above is a visualization of the state of New York.

Note: If we do not list your agency, please send an email to our Social Media team who will review your submission and update the directory accordingly.

If you are interested in working directly with this data or creating your own visualization (and embedding it on another website,) you can access the source data and sort or filter column headers to drill down further. Alternatively, you can select “More Views” from the top of the screen to start from existing visualizations. These include filtered datasets and maps.
