Children of Alcoholics Week
12-18 February 2012

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that as many as 1 in 4 children younger than age 18 is exposed to family alcohol abuse or dependence. The people hurt most by drugs and alcohol don't even use them; they are the CHILDREN of alcoholics and other drug dependent parents.

Children of Alcoholics Week is a Nationwide and International campaign designed to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by children of alcohol dependent parents. COA Week celebrates the recovery of the many thousands of children (of all ages) who have received the help they needed to recover from the pain and losses suffered in their childhood. COA Week also offers hope to those still suffering from the adverse impact of parental alcohol and drug addiction through educational programs and other available resources.

  • National Association for Children of Alcoholics provides material including: News releases, banners, pamphlets, posters, etc. that you may choose from in support of Children of Alcoholics Week activities
  • Al-Anon offers support and guidance to individuals directly affected by a problem drinker in their lives. Alateen offers peer support group for teens who are struggling with someone else's drinking problem
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides a digital version of the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Happens in the Best of Families brochure. The brochure describes how alcohol and drug addiction affects the whole family
  • Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs provides a digital version of the Alcohol brochure. The brochure identifies binge drinking and responsible drinking
  • Provides information on identifying common characteristics as a result of being raised in an alcoholic home. Encourages individuals to seek appropriate sources of support to understand and resolve them
  • Provides a quiz containing 20 questions to determine if you have been affected by someone else's drinking and how much you have been affected. The secret to taking this quiz is total honesty with yourself
  • Information included in this link supports Adult Children of Alcoholics. ACA is an anonymous twelve step program for women and men who grew up in alcoholic or dysfunctional homes.
