At the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), we conduct criminal investigations, regulate the firearms and explosives industries and assist other law enforcement agencies. We help to prevent terrorism, reduce violent crime and protect the public in a manner that is faithful to the Constitution and the laws of the United States.

Our Mission

We are a unique law enforcement agency in the United States Dept. of Justice that prevents, detects and responds to acts of terrorism and violent crime. We investigate and prosecute terrorist acts and violent crimes that involve explosives, arson and firearms; repeat and violent offenders; criminal gangs; the illegal use and trafficking of firearms and explosives; arson; and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products.

We partner with communities, industry, law enforcement and public safety agencies to safeguard the public we serve through information sharing, training, research and technology.

Special Agents

ATF Special Agent

Highly trained special agents are responsible for investigating violations of Federal law relating to firearms, explosives, arson, and alcohol and tobacco diversion. These investigations involve surveillance, interviewing suspects and witnesses, making arrests, obtaining and executing search warrants, and searching for physical evidence.

Industry operations investigators are the backbone of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) regulatory mission. Their work is primarily investigative and routinely involves contact with, and interviews of, individuals from all walks of life and all levels of industry and government.

ATF personnel

The Student Educational Employment Program has two components: the Student Temporary Employment Program, and the Student Volunteer Program. Each allows students the opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of fields and develop personal and professional skills. Students are exposed to the Federal work environment and will learn about the mission and responsibilities of ATF.
