Accessibility Options

Disability.gov provides several options for customizing the look of the site to fit an individual's accessibility needs.

Help Setting the Foreground and Background Color

Disability.gov provides two different ways to view the site; a full color option, which is the default, and an alternate high-contrast (yellow on black) option.

To set your preference, choose one of the two options below:

  • Sample view of Disability.gov in Full Color Disability.gov in Full Color
  • Sample view of Disability.gov in High Contrast Disability.gov in High Contrast

This change will be applied until you close your browser. If you find that you no longer want to see the site one way or if you return to Disability.gov in the future, just visit this page again to set your preference.

Help Increasing the Text Size in Your Web Browser

Windows

To determine which browser you have, open the "Help" menu and select the item that begins with "About."

To determine which version you have, open the "Help" menu and select "About Internet Explorer."

To increase the size of everything (text and images) on a page:

Keyboard

  • Hold the "Ctrl" key and press the "+" key to zoom in (press "-" to zoom out) or

Mouse

  • Open the "View" menu, select "Zoom," and then select "Zoom In", or
  • If you have a mouse with a wheel, hold the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and then scroll the wheel up to zoom in (scroll down to zoom out)

Internet Explorer 8

To increase the size of everything (text and images) on a page:

Keyboard

  • Hold the "Ctrl" key and press the "+" key to zoom in (press "-" to zoom out) or
  • Hold the "Alt" key and press "P" to open the Page menu, then press "Z" to select "Zoom." A list of zoom levels and commands will appear. Select the level that best meets your needs.

Mouse

  • In the bottom right corner of the Internet Explorer window, click the arrow to the right of the button and select a zoom level or command, or
  • If you have a mouse with a wheel, hold the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and then scroll the wheel up to zoom in (scroll down to zoom out)

Keyboard

First, you must tell Internet Explorer to ignore the normal font size by doing the following:

  1. Hold the "Alt" key and press "T" to open the Tools menu, then press "O" to select "Internet Options"
  2. Hold the "Alt" key and press "E" to open the Accessibility dialog box
  3. Press the "Tab" key several times until a box appears around "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages," then press the spacebar to check the checkbox

Next, you may change the text size by doing the following:

  • Hold the "Alt" key and press "V" to open the View menu, then press "X" to select "Text Size." A list of text sizes appears. Select the size that best meets your needs.

Mouse

First, you must tell Internet Explorer to ignore the normal font size by doing the following:

  1. Open the Tools menu and select "Internet Options"
  2. Click the "Accessibility" button in the lower right of the Internet Options dialog box
  3. Check the box labeled "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages"
