CDC Guidance on Scientific Integrity
This document provides an overarching summary of the policies, activities, and guiding principles that exist within Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR–henceforth referred to as CDC) in support of four key areas of scientific integrity: (1) foundations of scientific integrity in government, (2) public communications, (3) use of federal advisory committees, and (4) professional development of government scientists and engineers. The CDC has numerous policies on various aspects of scientific integrity; this guide allows CDC scientists, and those who support its scientific endeavors, to easily locate the appropriate policies that support the agency’s principles for scientific integrity.

Established in 1986, the Charles C. Shepard Science Award recognizes the premier science conducted by CDC scientists.

Director for Science
One of CDC’s strengths that allows for the accomplishment of this mission is the development of health promotion and health prevention strategies that are based on sound scientific knowledge. Excellence in science is our foundation and it mandates that we practice evidence-based science grounded in sound peer-reviewed research and that we assure a strong science base for public health action.
The Office of the Associate Director for Science (OADS) leads the agency in scientific vision by advancing the quality, integrity, and relevance of science, and by fostering successful scientific collaborations. The office upholds scientific ideals, establishes an environment thriving with scientific excellence, innovation and integrity, learning and discovery, and upholds the timely dissemination and translation into practice of scientific information, innovations, and technology.
The Associate Director for Science is the primary advisor to the CDC Director on scientific and medical matters and provides agency-wide scientific leadership.
OADS is an active participant in CDC’s effort to improve health literacy.
