Don’t Lose Sight

You could be going blind and not know it. That's what glaucoma does. It sneaks up on you gradually. Especially if you're over 60, or Black and over 40. Glaucoma can't be cured. But it can be controlled and the risk of blindness reduced if glaucoma is detected early. That's why it's so important to get an eye examination through dilated pupils. It doesn't hurt, it's easy, and it could save your sight. Get your eyes examined. Don't lose sight of glaucoma. A public service of the National Eye Health Education Program.

Driving Dad

Girl 1: It’s no big deal, Dad.  Doc said it would only take a few minutes.

Father: I hate going to the doctor.

Girl 2: But you’re in a high-risk group for glaucoma.

Did You Know?

Did you know that you could be going blind and not even know it? That's what glaucoma does. It sneaks up on you gradually. It's a leading cause of blindness in all adults over 60. But some people are especially at risk. If you're Black and over 40, you're up to five times more likely to get glaucoma. Or if you have a family history of glaucoma, you're also at high risk. Glaucoma can't be cured, but it can be controlled and the risk of blindness reduced-if glaucoma is detected and treated in time. That's why it's so important for people at increased risk, especially if you're Black and over 40, to have an eye examination through dilated pupils every two years. It doesn't hurt, it's easy, and it could save your sight. So make an appointment, now. Get your eyes examined. Don't lose sight of glaucoma. Man 1: Yeah, I heard about glaucoma.  It’s got to do with your eyes, right?

Man 2: It’s a disease that, if left untreated, could cost you your sight.

Man 1: Well, my eyes are good.  Why should I care?

Man 2: You’re an African American.  Glaucoma is three times more likely to strike you, just because of who you are.  That’s why you should care.

Man 1: Okay.  Okay.  So, what should I do now?

Man 2: See your eye care professional and get a dilated eye exam, that’s what.  You’ve had your eyes checked before, right?

Man 1: No, but I’ve never had any problems with my vision.

Man 2: Most people who have it don’t even know they do.  It’s sneaky, man. That’s why you need to see your eye care professional.

Announcer: Cool jazz.  Sounds great, huh?  I want to make a point with this music—about your vision, and a disease called glaucoma.  Imagine your sight was like your hearing.  If you had full hearing, you’d be hearing the whole band, but with glaucoma, your sight begins to go—around the edges at first.

(The music is now only piano and drums; the base and horns have faded out.)

Announcer: If left untreated, glaucoma can cause a total loss of vision.  Just like that—

(Drums fade out and only the piano is left. Then the piano fades out.)

Announcer: And there is no cure for glaucoma.  But if you catch it early through a dilated eye exam and treat it, your vision can be preserved.  And if you are an African American over the age of 40, you are at higher risk.
