Create an imaginary landscape with NGAkids JUNGLE. Mix and match the animals, control the weather and lighting conditions, or construct flowers, trees, and plants. An "AUTO" button generates random compositions, so you can sample program options and experiment with special effects as a starting point for your own designs. This Shockwave interactive is intended for children of all ages.  To begin, just click one of the menu pictures above.

JUNGLE is inspired by the paintings of French artist Henri Rousseau. Learn more about the artist's work, or plan to see Henri Rousseau: Jungles in Paris, a special exhibition that will be on view at the National Gallery of Art from July 16–October 15, 2006.

How to use this interactive:

Click a menu picture and see what happens, or use the AUTO button for ideas.  It will make a new arrangement each time you click it. Click the tab or arrow at the end of each menu row for more options. If you need help with the program, click the question mark. If the top of this page is blank, download or update Shockwave Player.

Your design will disappear if you click the eraser, use the AUTO button, close your browser, or shut down your computer.

To print your jungle scene, click the printer-shaped icon to the right of the question mark. If you use your browser's print button, the picture will not print.  To save the image on your computer, take a screenshot.

NOTE: If your computer is running a recent version of Windows or Mac OS X and you have Shockwave 11, please use this version of the program. If you are running Snow Leopard OS 10.6 on your Mac, please run  Safari in 32-bit mode. Here's how.

An early version is available for older Windows-based computers. Older Macs running OS 10.4 Tiger can use it, too, but the program will load slowly on the Mac and printing has been disabled.

With the Jungle interactive, you can make scenes like this:
