Introducing "E-Verify Self Check," An Online Tool That Allows Workers to Check Their Own Employment Eligibility Status
(Posted by Alejandro Mayorkas , U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director)
Today I am proud to announce the launch of E-Verify Self Check. E-Verify is a smart, simple, and effective web-based tool that allows us to work with employers to help them maintain a legal workforce. E-Verify Self Check is an innovative, first of its kind service that will help protect workers and streamline the E-Verify process for businesses.
Put simply, Self Check gives workers fast and secure access to their employment eligibility information before they apply for jobs. In this way, workers are able to identify whether there are any inaccuracies in their Social Security Administration or DHS records before they seek employment, and submit corrections for any inaccuracies ahead of time. Self Check also assists employers by reducing the number of tentative mismatches that could otherwise result when a worker’s government records are not updated.
Every aspect of E-Verify Self Check was designed to secure users’ personally identifiable information and to prevent misuse of the service. For example, E-Verify Self Check uses an identity assurance process to confirm that the person attempting to run a check is who he or she claims to be to avoid fraud or abuse.
Beginning today, the E-Verify Self Check service is available to users who maintain an address and are physically located in Arizona , Idaho , Colorado , Mississippi , Virginia or the District of Columbia . In the coming months, USCIS will continue to expand the E-Verify Self Check service to additional eligible users on a rolling basis.
We at USCIS are proud of this latest E-Verify enhancement, and we are confident that it will prove to be a valuable tool for employees and employers alike. I welcome your feedback as we move forward.
For more details on E-Verify Self Check, I invite you to read the accompanying News Release and Fact Sheet, or visit the E-Verify Self Check Web Page.
March 22 update from the USCIS Blog Team: Director Mayorkas participated in a live interview this morning on Federal News Radio on E-Verify Self Check. Listen to the interview here.

I think this is one wonderful move of the USCIS. Prior to apply for a job, job-seekers know our status. And this reduces doubts as to why response from employers are not forthcoming, regarding job applications.
Although it is a good step forward, who is going to make sure businesses and larger conglomerates are actually going to use it?... and more importantly abide by it and not hire 'illegal' aliens?
How can I verify if my name was restored in the naturalization database?

I don't get this - why would you need to self-check employment eligibility if a person is a US citizen, LPR? Perhaps this will be useful for someone who hopped across the fence and bought papers on the street, but I don't see how this is useful for someone who is in the US legally.
I hope this will be more accurate than the online case status system for pending applications. I also hope that resources are not being pulled from adjudicating cases.
After six years of waiting, my green card application has now been current for two months and I can't get anyone to tell me why it is taking so long to process my preadjudicated application.
Awesome initiative!
The dept has done a great job on this matter, at least, people will be able to check their status at ease before processing any apllication for job.Kudos and more greases to your elbow.
Will this information be shared with Monitoring & Compliance investigators? In other words, are individuals waiving all rights to government use of the data just as employers do when they sign up for the system? Say it ain't so.
Dear USCIS,
Like an answer from you. What steps you are going to take for EB-3 India families whose I-140 is approved and stuck for past 10 years everything legal still renewing their H1B due to Priority date backlogs??? Please need an answer. You cannot ignore 100,000 families whos is stuck and cannot take any decision.
I think this is a great program for self check. As for me I am a Naturalized U.S Citizen and also a member of the Army National Guard on active duty orders. To make story short ,I never had problems in the past when I was a LEGAL PERMANENT RESIDENT ALIEN or LPR ,but when I was naturalized in August 2009 I left my second last name or maiden name on my certificate of naturalization, and didn't think anything of it.I soon applied for a U.S. PASSPORT which was issued without my Maiden name , just FIRST,MIDDLE AND LAST , just like my SSN CARD , MILITARY CAC ID CARD,and DRIVER'S LICENSE.I soon found out when I applied for FAFSA PELL GRANT,that I had a name mismatch and my SSA records did not show U.S. Citizen code,so I went to local SSA Office to update my record with my Certificate of Naturalization and U.S. Passport as proof of citizenship and my record was finally updated dropping my Maiden name from SSA records but not from DHS USCIS records. I was also investigated in 11/2009 by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management for a Security Clearance background investigation and no issues arose due to my name or citizenship status , now my problem is ? I tried to self check using the website , but could not proceed due to a possible fraud alert on my credit file,I know I placed an Active Duty Alert on all 3 of my credit reports. I just wanna check my goverment records pertaining to me to make sure they are accurate! Is there a DHS USCIS contact number to check this information if a person cannot Self Check E verify ONLINE?
Good that people can check their status and information has been put in as it should be but will buisnesses be able to use it to check employees status?
It works! I'm so glad to know now that living in the land of the free and the home of the brave, I qualify for work under the thumb of the E-verify. Forget the notion of "Live Free or Die". New Hampshire needs to reconstitute their license plate to reflect "We give up!". Rick in Denver
Looks like a step in the right direction. As a roofing company in Atlanta, we struggle with immigrant workers all the time. Thanks for the update.
This is a good effort for public to check their legal status. But, my question is, how does it really help legal residents? Initially e-verify program was launched not to employ illegals. Unless there is a mandatory for employers, how does this help? USCIS instead of wasting time on this, can think of improving their immigration system. Don't blame congress has to fix. There are lot of potential internal process improvement in the existing system. If you try to use the time fix those, will help a lot to the country.
THIS COUNTRY NEEDS MORE THINKS TO FIX?????
DON'T THINK THE ILEGAL PEOPLE GOT BORKE THIS COUNTRY
WE NEED PEOPLE THE KNOWS WHATS GOING ON THIS COUNTRY IS EVERYBODYS COUNTRY
why do most offericer that interview for I485 that make a person major life decision off their own perception about that person without looking into supported documents that is being provided??...I don't get it!!!!!
Thank you USCIS for opening E-Verify us so that people can self-check and see if someone is illegally using their Social Security number.
My daughter received a letter from the IRS that someone else is using her Social Security number.
Now we can find out who is using it fraudulently.
This sounds like a very good idea
I am US citizen but my E-verify came with funny stuff like my record does not much some private agency's database.
Why should the agency use private agencies any way?
I think federal database should be the only criteria.
Why should public funds be used in this way?
I understand why employers are not willing to use E-verify, after all it creates more problems than it solves.
What if somebody does not willing to verify? What if you found somthing wrong like different address during H1B?Everytime i apply for job a employer verify and uscis keep track of everything?
It sounds like very fearfull zone for employee.Employee are the sufferer during H1B period and making them worst.8 days period ,this is joke. This is just simple creating more problem than solve something.I am unwilling to verify it because don't want to add more problem to my immigration sitation.
Does the system throw up automatic red flags when there are discrepancies between the different databases it pulls information from? Or, does one database take priority over another?
its just another BS from DOH/DOS, I can guarantee they themselves won't accept printout of this system as a proof of eligibility for a person seeking employment in US
This is great.. wonder when it will hit Mass
people on this forum need to realize that legally present folks includes naturalized citizens, Legal PR (green card) AS WELL AS a couple other classifications that are on non immigrant (guest worker) program.. This will be very useful for THOSE folks - since it will help them address any inaccuracies in their records. Some idiot here chimed that this will be useful for illegal alien - i challenge them how so?
Another thing to note, this site should be un monitored by USCIS - to possibly defend civil liberties. Legal residents are entitled to privacy as well..
It actually makes sense to know what your future employer will see when they run e-verify on you.
I know that many of the employer are doing "e-verify" like my employer did to me but HOW COME THEY STILL have ILLEgals HOW? WHAT really hurts me it's that I went to a very long process to be legal and now my employer treatsme so bad just because he can replace me for a illegal cheap worker...
Hope California will be included soon

Hey Charles;
The lack of response from the companies you applied to probably has nothing to do with any dubts as to whether or not you're employment-authorized.
I hope USCIS will hire more adjudicators to speed up the adjudication process.
Excellent site, thanks to the opening of the USCIS E-Verify to us that people can self-check to see if someone is illegally using your Social Security number. My daughter received a letter from the IRS that someone else uses their social security number.
