About the Office of the Inspector General

The 1988 amendment to the Inspector General Act of 1978 added the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), along with 32 other agencies, to the list of agencies with statutory Inspectors General.

The Office of Inspector General was formally established at NARA in April 1989.

The mission of the NARA Inspector General is:

  • to help NARA ensure ready access to essential evidence by providing high quality audits and investigations
  • to serve as an independent internal advocate for efficiency and effectiveness

Inspector General: Paul Brachfeld

  • Mr. Brachfeld was appointed as NARA's Inspector General on December 20, 1999.
