Photograph of diverse raised hands. As we have already shared, a group of federal partners committed to ending homelessness is leading the charge to collect better data on the number of homeless young people living on their own. Youth Count! is a pilot study being conducted in nine sites in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s January 2013 Point-in-Time count of people experiencing homelessness. The goal of Youth Count! is to identify methods and strategies to better identify and count unaccompanied homeless youth that can be replicated in future counts.

You can find guidance on identifying unaccompanied homeless youth for your count by watching a webinar series hosted by the Runaway and Homeless Youth Training and Technical Assistance Center.

Topics include:

  • Developing strategies for the count
  • Collecting data in culturally appropriate and sensitive ways
  • Choosing outreach and sampling methods
  • Involving youth, universities, and volunteers
  • Coordinating street counts, HUD’s Homeless Management Information System, and data from schools

FYSB’s Runaway and Homeless Youth Program grantees are encouraged to listen to the recorded webinars and to share them with members of their local school districts and HUD continuums of care.
