The Renaissance celebration of a new humanistic outlook had a profound effect on the visual arts. Whereas medieval art focused on ethereal or otherworldly truths, man and human achievement became the center of all things in the Renaissance. In addition to religious art, portraiture flourished in Florence in the fifteenth century, and the Venetians excelled in their depictions of the pastoral landscape, while Rome, with its papal patronage, became a vital artistic center in the early sixteenth century.
Innovation was not limited to the arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture. The decorative arts also flourished, and appreciation of color, pattern, and fine craftsmanship prevailed with the consumption of luxury goods such as jewelry, textiles, ceramics, and finely-wrought objects.
