Now Playing: New Developer Challenges Using Health Data!
By Todd Park
Here’s some very exciting news regarding the Community Health Data Initiative! Our intrepid colleagues at Health 2.0, Matthew Holt and Indu Subaiya, are launching four new application development challenges today under the auspices of the overall Health 2.0 2010 Developer Challenge, announced at our Community Health Data Forum in June.
These new challenges encompass building tools to help kids understand and apply health data, applications that inspire physical activity, applications that turn patient data into useful services for patients, and new tools for medical providers. Check out these challenges at http://health2challenge.org, where you can find out more details about them -- and sign up to participate!
The fruit of these challenges will be showcased in October in San Francisco. Health 2.0 is also very interested in birthing additional challenges, and is looking for additional ideas! Think about it – if you had a challenge to make to effect change through health data, what would it be?

From the mouths of babes as they say: My just-turned 13 year old startled me this past weekend by indicating that he totally gets the importance of diet and exercise. For dinner, he ordered a salad and went easy on the dressing, and then proceeded to ask me to show him how to workout with free weights. Messages related to the dire consequences of a poor diet and lack of exercise appear to be sifting down to our children at an age where positive change can still be effected. This bodes well for the work that DHHS is doing as it strives to bring health data to young Americans. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for the post Todd! And thanks so much too for giving up your "retirement" to take on such an exacting (if fun) task at HHS. One minor note--we've launched the Health 2.0 Developer Challenge with 4 initial challenges/prizes, but there are several more lined up and we DEFINITELY encourage more people to get involved as challengers, data providers, developers, designers and in other ways! Let' help change health care with the power of innovation.
