Health Alert Network Update

When a potential public health emergency occurs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site (www.cdc.gov) can be your source for timely, accurate and scientifically precise information to help prepare you as situations develop.

As most of you know by now, specimens positive for Yersinia pestis that were reported missing late yesterday afternoon from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Laboratory in Lubbock, Texas have now been located. The F.B.I. has concluded that all the missing vials have been accounted for and determined that there is no danger to public safety whatsoever. The investigation is still underway.

While TTUHSC officials had no reason to believe the samples were intentionally removed from the laboratory, they promptly notified local, state, and federal public health and law enforcements officials. Because of current concerns about potential misuse, and questions you may receive about plague, CDC is communicating this information to state public health officials.

For additional information on Yersinia pestis and plague, please visit the CDC website at www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/plague/index.asp

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protects people's health and safety by preventing and controlling diseases and injuries; enhances health decisions by providing credible information on critical health issues; and promotes healthy living through strong partnerships with local, national and international organizations.
