School-based health centers are an important component of the nation’s health care safety net.  The centers enable children with acute or chronic illnesses to attend school as well as help to improve the overall health and wellness of children and adolescents through health screenings, health promotion and disease prevention activities.  By making the connection to health care easy, school-based health centers ensure that children have access to the services they need to lead healthy lives.

WHO Reports Some Progress Toward Millennium Goals for Infectious Diseases – May 16 (WHO)
The World Health Organization (WHO) described mixed results in the battles against major infectious diseases, in an update on progress toward the health components of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The goals were set by the UN in 2000, with targets for 2015.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough) – What You Need To Know – May 14 (CDC)
Pertussis (whooping cough) is very contagious and can cause serious illness―especially in infants too young to be fully vaccinated. Pertussis vaccines are recommended for children, teens, and adults, including pregnant women.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease – May 14 (CDC)
Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a contagious viral illness that commonly affects infants and children. There is no vaccine to prevent the disease. But, you and your family can take simple steps to reduce your risk.

Current Travel Warnings – May 8 (US Department of State)
Travel Warnings are issued when long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable lead the State Department to recommend that Americans avoid or consider the risk of travel to that country. A Travel Warning is also issued when the U.S. Government's ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consulate or because of a drawdown of its staff.

Food Allergies: What You Need to Know – May 15 (FDA)

Update: Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly Infections Associated with a Raw Scraped Ground Tuna Product – May 17 (CDC)
CDC is collaborating with public health officials in many states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella serotype Bareilly infections. Salmonella Bareilly is an unusual serotype of Salmonella.  A total of 316 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Bareilly (304 persons) or Salmonella Nchanga (12 persons) have been reported from 26 states and the District of Columbia.

Multistate Outbreak of Human Salmonella Infantis Infections Linked to Dry Dog Food – May 11 (CDC)
CDC is collaborating with public health and agriculture officials in multiple states and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate an ongoing multistate outbreak of human Salmonella Infantis infections. A total of 15 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis have been reported from 9 states. Additionally, one ill person has been reported from Canada.
