Formed in 1848 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and five other young artists and writers, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood sought to restore to art what they saw as the passionate expression of the fourteenth century. The movement left an indelible stamp on British art, with romantic imagery often illustrating scenes from classical mythology, medieval legend, and biblical stories.
