Flu View – 2010-2011 Influenza Season Week 01 ending January 08, 2011 – CDC (Jan 14)
During week 1 (January 2-8, 2011), influenza activity in the United States decreased. Of the 4,331 specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories and reported to CDC/Influenza Division, 706 (16.3%) were positive for influenza.

Strengthening Haiti's Heath Systems – CDC (Jan 04)
Following Haiti’s devastating earthquake in Jan 2010, CDC was invited to help reestablish and strengthen the country’s public health system. The CDC Health Systems Reconstruction Office (HSRO) partners with the Haiti Ministry of Health and Population (MSPP), the U.S. Health and Human Services, USAID, the U.S. military, other international organizations to assess and respond to the immediate and long-term public health needs in Haiti. CDC is engaged in public health areas spanning the arenas of rabies, malnutrition, and dengue to immunizations and HIV/TB.

New FDA consumer education materials on the Safe Use of Acetaminophen – FDA (Jan 14)
Acetaminophen, also called APAP, is one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States for treating pain and fever. It is in many over-the-counter and prescription medicines. For most, acetaminophen is safe and effective when used as directed. However, if you take more than directed, acetaminophen can cause serious liver injury.

FDA limits acetaminophen in prescription combination products; requires liver toxicity warnings – FDA (Jan 13)
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is asking manufacturers of prescription combination products that contain acetaminophen to limit the amount of acetaminophen to no more than 325 milligrams (mg) in each tablet or capsule. The FDA also is requiring manufacturers to update labels of all prescription combination acetaminophen products to warn of the potential risk for severe liver injury.
