American Robin, 1832
This toy is inspired by Robert Havell’s American Robin, 1832, which is part of a folio of etchings that was presented to the Gallery in 1945.
Robert Havell (American, 1793–1878) was the principal engraver of John James Audubon’s (American, 1785–1851) Elephant Folio The Birds of America, published 1827–1838. Havell’s hand-colored etchings and aquatints are now recognized as a significant artistic achievement in their own right and as an essential component of the success of The Birds of America.
