Check Your Steps: Food Safe Families
One in six Americans will get sick from food poisoning this year alone. The Food Safe Families campaign, a cooperative effort of USDA, FDA, CDC, and the Ad Council, urges you to Check Your Steps. By following four simple steps, you can help keep your family safe from food poisoning at home.
Screen capture: CLEAN Ad Clean: Wash hands and surfaces often.
Unless you wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces the right way, you could spread bacteria to your food, and your family.
Screen capture: Separate Ad Separate: Don't cross-contaminate.
Even after you've cleaned your hands and surfaces thoroughly, raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs can still spread illness-causing bacteria to ready-to-eat foods—unless you keep them separate.
Screen capture: COOK Ad Cook to the right temperature.
Did you know that the bacteria that cause food poisoning multiply quickest in the "Danger Zone" between 40° and 140° Fahrenheit?
Screen capture: CHILL Ad Chill: Refrigerate promptly.
Illness-causing bacteria can grow in perishable foods within two hours unless you refrigerate them.
