In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, artists systematically began to investigate the “building blocks” of art. These explorations included the simplification of shapes (often for symbolic or spiritual purposes) and the scientific study of color and optical effects. Designers in the twenty-first century continue this tradition, exploiting the visual elements of color and shape in a wide variety of expressions. This fringed shawl is inspired by the new palette and the trend toward abstraction in the modern era.
