2012 Safety Standdown

From the Director, FAA Flight Standards
John Allen, Director, FAA Flight Standards
Welcome to the 2012 FAA Safety Team Standdown. I am privileged to introduce and encourage your participation in the 3rd Safety Standdown, which focuses on one of the leading factors among GA accidents - loss of control. Other focus areas of this nationwide safety event include enhancing your decision making skills and taking a more advanced look at preflighting your aircraft. I encourage you to invest the time here to stop, listen, and learn about these important topics. That way, you won’t be surprised – you’ll be prepared

Focus Areas

Maneuvering Flight Angle of Attack:
Taking Back Control
A special Loss Of Control workgroup dedicated to researching, analyzing—and most importantly— developing solutions for this leading culprit of accidents was formed. We focus on their findings in this year’s Safety Standdown.

En Route Cruise Advanced Preflight:
Take Your Preflight Inspection to the Next Level
How well do you know your aircraft, and who exactly is inspecting and maintaining it? Enhancing your relationship with your aircraft’s history and your mechanic are both critical components of an advanced preflight. Recent NTSB accident data shows poor preflight inspections caused or contributed to 156 GA accidents and 41 fatalities.

Going Beyond Preflight Keeping an Upright Attitude:
Aeronautical Decision Making Countermeasures
Loss of control accidents have been on an increase for all categories of flight for the past 25 years. That’s why countering LOC-I is a focus area for the FAA’s 2012 Safety Standdown. No matter how LOC is defined or accounted for in accident statistics, the fact remains that all pilots need to focus harder on staying in control.

Positive Flight Attitude Pilot-in-Control:
Avoiding Loss of Control Accidents
When we talk about loss of control, we are referring to accidents resulting from situations in which the pilot should have either maintained or regained control of the aircraft, but did not. 40% of the fatal accidents during the period 2001-2010 were categorized as Loss of Control-Inflight (LOC-I), outpacing the number two fatal accident category by a three-to-one margin.

13 Tips to Keep You Flying Safely
If I could, I would wave a magic wand and wish that pilots always made the right decisions so that aircraft accidents would become a thing of the past. While not possible, when you consider that approximately 80 percent of accidents are caused by poor decision making, it’s clear that we each have the capability to make a dramatic impact on the accident rate. “13 Tips to Keep You Flying Safely” (magazine page 19, PDF page 21.)

Going Beyond Preflight
For many pilots, the preflight inspection cliché of “kick the tires and light the fires” is difficult to shake. Then, there is the strong tendency to fall victim to complacency, especially when dealing with an aircraft you fly all the time. A good preflight can be the difference between a safe flight and quite possibly your last flight. A checklist is an excellent resource for ensuring you follow a reliable workflow and cover all the required inspection items. But, there is a lot more to a preflight than checking items off a list. “Going Beyond Preflight” (magazine page 12, PDF page 14)

Positive Flight Attitude
An airplane’s physical attitude is relatively easy to understand. The pilot’s mental attitude is more complicated. One of the trickiest aspects of mental attitude is that the beliefs, feelings, and values driving our disposition to act in certain ways are often as invisible to us as water is to a fish. “Positive Flight Attitude” (magazine page 8, PDF page 10).
