Vision: A Sudan and South Sudan that are politically stable, economically prosperous, and at peace with its own people and neighbors.

Mission: The United States, in concert with the international community, will:

  • support full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, including holding credible national elections in 2009 and a credible referendum in 2011
  • facilitate a political agreement that stops the violence in Darfur, including cross-border violence with Chad, and allows the return of displaced persons to their home areas, and
  • promote regional engagement that effectively counters terrorism and supports stability.

Sudan: Steps to the Referendum

The United States continues to urge the parties to ensure full and timely implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. We support the CPA parties as they make preparations to conduct a peaceful referendum that reflects the will of the Sudanese people on January 9, 2011, and are determined to avoid destabilization or delay. As we approach the referendum, please find weekly updates reflecting the status of referendum preparations below. January 9, 2011 Update»  See full list here»
