FOIA Conferences Planned

The Office of Information and Privacy is planning to hold a series of governmentwide conferences of agency FOIA officers as a follow-up to the issuance of statements of new FOIA policy by President Clinton and Attorney General Reno this year.

The first such "FOIA Officers Conference" was held on November 3, at conference facilities provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. OIP gathered the principal administrative FOIA officers from nearly all federal agencies to discuss the governmentwide dissemination and implementation of these new FOIA policies. Further such conferences are now being planned to be held periodically throughout the year, with the next one planned to be held during the month of February.

To assist in the planning of these conferences, OIP has formed a "FOIA Officers Advisory Group," consisting of the principal FOIA officers from five representative departments and agencies: Ross Cirrincione, from the Department of Health and Human Services; Miriam M. Miller, from the Department of Labor; Patricia N. Riep, from NASA; GayLa D. Sessoms, from the Securities & Exchange Commission; and Charlie Y. Talbott, from the Department of Defense.

Additionally, OIP also is planning to hold a "FOIA Community Conference" -- a gathering of representatives of the FOIA requester community and other interested persons in furtherance of the spirit of Attorney General Reno's FOIA Memorandum -- at the Department of Justice sometime during the month of January.
