Outreach

We are proud of our consistent and energetic commitment to education and future workforce development in geospatial science and technology as well as community service.  Group members actively collaborate with faculty and students from leading academic programs and work with K-12 students of the region.  A number of group members have joint affiliations with other universities and in those capacities they offer classes and directly mentor graduate students.  College faculty and students, with backgrounds in geography, earth sciences, computer and computational sciences, engineering, and social sciences, can engage with our research program in several ways.

  • DOE national laboratory internship opportunities allow faculty members and students to spend one or more academic terms at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  For more information about these programs, please visit the ORNL Educational and Research Experience site.
  • DOE Research Alliance for Math and Science (RAMS) program.
  • We continuously have opportunities for pos-BS, post-MS, and post-doctoral candidates to spend 1-3 years working on various research projects.
  • University of Tennessee students can earn college credit by enrolling in a specially designed course to gain research experience in geospatial science and technology (Geography 430) where one can spend up to twenty hours in a semester working with a group member on a project.

Highlights of our research and education outreach program include:

  • Mentoring students successful in obtaining fellowships from the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, and Universities for pursuing graduate degrees.  Some of our recent students have been recruited by graduate programs at UC Santa Barbara, Penn State University, Purdue University, and the University of Tennessee.
  • Mentoring a DOE Computational Sciences Graduate Fellow in Computational Geography.
  • Multiple DOE Outstanding Mentor Awards for our staff.
  • Coaching Oak Ridge High School students in geospatial science for the National Science Bowl.
  • Raising geography awareness at local elementary and high schools.
