New Podcast: Working With Traumatized Teens

In a new Voices From the Field podcast, Chicago social worker Allison Elias talks about the effects of childhood trauma on transition-age youth. Elias has presented her talk "Why Is It So Hard to Move On? The Impact of Trauma on Transitioning Youth" at nearly a dozen conferences since 2008.

Elias talks about the specific difficulties of helping traumatized youth as they approach adulthood, and encourages youth workers and parents to take it slow, communicate openly about youths' fears, and help them build support networks. She addresses the fact that many youth with traumatic pasts have a particular fear of adulthood since they often missed a "traditional" childhood. But mostly she stresses the importance of empathy and honest discussion.
