Where We Work

Through our assistance programs, USAID plays an active and critical role in the promotion of U.S. foreign policy interests. The investment we make in developing countries has long-term benefits for America and the American people. Development now takes its place alongside defense and diplomacy as the three essential components of American foreign policy.

Afghanistan and Pakistan

Afghanistan and Pakistan, USAID's two largest assistance programs, reflect the United States' commitment to the region's long-term stability and human progress.

Africa

The emerging face of Africa is one of promise and stability, of opportunities to build on progress and bring about lasting change.  However, three out of every four Africans still live in poverty, and there are still challenges to be addressed in many parts of the continent. Today USAID is supporting its African partners as they confront these challenges and embrace their potential.

Asia

Home to more than half the world's population, Asia is the fastest-growing region on earth. The region continues to grapple with large pockets of poverty, malnutrition, food insecurity, environmental degradation, corruption and fragile institutions of governance. USAID seeks to partner with Asian governments and civil society, businesses and non-profits to harness the innovation and ideas that can tackle these challenges and create a healthier, safer and more prosperous future for the people of Asia and the United States.

Europe and Eurasia

Having emerged from decades of authoritarian rule, most of Europe and Eurasia has embraced political and economic reform, leading to vibrant growth and inspiring democratic transformations. But development challenges still slow the area’s growth and transformation into a region that is whole, free and at peace. USAID continues to address the pervasive corruption, political stagnation, significant poverty and undeveloped policy and regulatory environments that hold the region back. As a region of increasing economic importance, our investments help support American trade and investment. And as home to several NATO allies, our development ties strengthen critical national security bonds.

Latin America and the Caribbean

In recent years, Latin American and Caribbean countries have experienced strong economic growth and implemented social programs that have reduced poverty and inequality. In the past 20 years, poverty has declined from 49 percent to 31 percent in Latin America. Political advances have been notable as well: Free elections, vibrant civil society and responsive governments are mostly the norm. Economic and political stability in the Western Hemisphere are vital for the United States. Drug trafficking and violence that afflict our southern neighbors can penetrate our borders and impact U.S. communities. Latin America and the Caribbean are also important and growing markets for American companies--a quarter of U.S. exports go to the region.

Middle East

USAID partners with the people of the Middle East to build a peaceful and prosperous future. Our programs have directly contributed to improvements in infrastructure, health, education, governance and economic growth. USAID’s development experience allows us to address the parallel needs that fueled the Arab Spring: people’s desire to seek new opportunities, to participate in decisions that affect their lives, to work in economies, and to be part of societies that are free of corruption. USAID’s assistance not only delivers on America’s values; it constitutes an investment in the safety, security and prosperity of this critically important region.

The following map depicts the locations of USAID-funded projects to better monitor development results, improve aid effectiveness and coordination, and enhance transparency and social accountability. The map depicts the total number of unique projects at the administrative one boundary level (i.e. region, state, province). A subset of USAID’s missions has been chosen to participate in the initial rollout of the map. Over time the intent is to display a comprehensive portfolio of agency projects on the map.
