Washington, DC. . .Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James MacGregor Burns will discuss his book, Dead Center: Clinton-Gore Leadership and the Perils of Moderation on Tuesday, November 16, at the National Archives Building on Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held at noon in Room 105.
In their book, Dr.Burns and co-author political scientist Georgia Sorenson offer a dispassionate view of the Clinton Presidency. William Jefferson Clinton aspired to greatness upon assuming the Presidency, but according to the authors, he pursued a leadership strategy that assured he would never achieve it.
In November 1996, The University of Maryland renamed the Center for Political Leadership and Participation the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership. Dr. Burns is a Senior Scholar at the Academy. In a career that has been marked by excellence as a teacher, writer, and scholar, Dr. Burns also has been an activist. He ran for Congress from western Massachusetts in 1958 and served as a delegate to four Democratic National Conventions. Dr.Burns was the Woodrow Wilson Professor of Government at Williams College and President of the American Political Science Association. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Soldier of Freedom (Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich), a biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Georgia J. Sorenson is a senior scholar and the founding director of the Burns Academy. Formerly a senior policy analyst in the Carter White House, she has served as a consultant to four Presidential campaigns.
