Staying On Top of Computer Security
Welcome to the new and improved OnGuardOnline.gov – the U.S. government’s site to help people be safe, secure and responsible online. It’s chock-full of practical tips and helpful resources, whether you're securing your computer at home; developing lesson plans for a school or community group; or planning a corporate training program.
OnGuardOnline.gov is a partnership of 15 federal agencies, led by the Federal Trade Commission. You’ll notice that we’ve linked up with the Stop.Think.Connect.™ campaign, managed by the Department of Homeland Security. We’ll have more to say about the Stop.Think.Connect. campaign’s activities and accomplishments in future posts – including its impressive partnerships with national organizations for youth.
The OnGuard Online blog will feature cybersecurity news from around the government, spotlight how-to articles and videos, and offer insights from federal officials. Check back regularly for updates, or sign up to get an email when a new post is up. The blog is two-way communication: please let us know what topics you’re interested in, and your thoughts on recent developments related to computer security and online safety.
So, how can you use OnGuardOnline.gov materials? If you’re updating your website or blog, link to us. Editing a newsletter? “Drop in” an article of interest to your readers. Speaking at a community meeting? Print publications directly from the site or use the FTC’s bulk order site for free materials to distribute. All the OnGuardOnline.gov information is in the public domain. That means you’re welcome to copy it, adapt it, post it, or link to it. I hope you will.

someone called me on my home phone that could not speak very good english and really did not know what i was saying to him. He said he was from Microsoft. This is the second time I got a call from this number. The number is 253-802-0308. When I called it back I got a recording saying it was Jennifer Leach. She gave this email address. I don't believe the person that called me wanting me to turn my computer on was working with the Federal Trade commision.
OnGuardOnline.gov never contacts users over the phone. The calls you received didn’t come from either the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or OnGuardOnline.gov. The caller appears to be using technology to create a fake call-back number. Never give out personal information in response to one of these calls. The recording you heard was created by the Federal Trade Commission, and is used by phone companies to warn people about the dangers of “phishing.” The phone companies play that message after they take down a scammer’s message from the same phone line. Again, the people calling your number have no affiliation with the Federal Trade Commission. If you’d like to file a complaint regarding these phone calls, visit ftc.gov/complaint.
