  • Vets observe 70 years of history

    Veterans, part of the 317th Troop Carrier Group, came out to Fort Benning Friday to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the unit, which started in 1942, during World War II. More than 100 veterans and their spouses attended the Heritage Flight and Troop Drop event, where they watched the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team drop from a World War II C-47 Transport Aircraft used by the 317th. The demonstration team wore vintage paratrooper uniforms.

    Urban operations -- for Infantrymen, it's a foundational skill they'll use frequently throughout their careers. For the 210 Infantrymen in F Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, it's the newest skill they've learned. Spc. Matthew Batzel, who chose the Special Forces Enlistment Option when he joined the Army, said the realistic urban operations training helped him feel more ready to fill his role as a Soldier. "We haven't done anything quite like this yet," he said. "This is the exciting stuff. This is why a lot of people joined. The little things are starting to make sense -- why we do certain things. I definitely feel more comfortable becoming a Soldier."

The game turned out to be quite different from the 60-27 shootout in Montgomery, Ala., however, with both defenses giving the offense more than it could handle.

    Command Sgt. Major Basil Plumley, a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, died Oct. 10 after a short battle with cancer. He was 92. Plumley was the command sergeant major of 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, during the November 1965 Ia Drang battle. Plumley's bravery in Vietnam was probably a mixture of inherent character and confidence gained on the battle field. The West Virginia native, who was born on the first day of 1920, earned the Combat Infantryman Badge in World War II, Korea and Vietnam (where he served two tours.) He was one of only 324 Soldiers to claim that honor.

The school held it's first session Thursday and discussed the issue of suicide to coincide with the Armywide Suicide Stand Down. One could argue that much of it begins at the Noncommissioned Officer Academy's Warrior Leader Course. The 17-day course is geared toward specialists and sergeants. The CCSS initiative is coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers and is a state-led effort without federal government involvement. Forty-six states -- including Georgia and Alabama, two territories and the District of Columbia -- have accepted the standards.

    The Maneuver Center of Excellence has named two facilities at McGinnis-Wickam Hall after a pair of lieutenant colonels killed in the war on terrorism. A first-floor lecture hall is now officially known as Derby Auditorium in honor of Lt. Col. Garnet "Gary" R. Derby, while a classroom on the east side of the headquarters building was designated the Fenty Room for Lt. Col. Joseph J. Fenty Jr. The dual dedication ceremonies, which kicked off in Marshall Auditorium, took place Monday. About 700 people attended, including the Families of both men.

    Fort Benning's Directorate of Emergency Services fire department recently won two awards in Installation Management Command's annual Fire and Emergency Service Awards for 2011.
