Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Submit a Request for GAO Work?

Requesting GAO Services: Requests for GAO services must come from a Member of Congress. GAO will respond to such requests according to its Congressional Protocols. A request letter should include a brief background description of the issue and a list of questions to be addressed. It is helpful to provide the name and phone number of the staff member who will be the principal contact for this work in the Committee or the Member’s office. Letters should be signed, on the appropriate Committee/Member letterhead, and addressed to:

    Gene L. Dodaro
Comptroller General of the United States
    U.S. Government Accountability Office
    441 G Street, NW, - Room 7100
    Washington, DC 20548

To ensure timely receipt of your letter, we recommend that you fax it to us in lieu of sending it through the mail. Our fax number for congressional request letters is (202) 512-7919.

We will acknowledge receipt of your request via a phone call to the principal contact designated in the letter within 2 business days.

For further assistance in drafting a request letter, contact the Office of Congressional Relations at (202) 512-4400.
