John R. Glowa, Ph.D.

As program officer at NCCAM, John R. Glowa, Ph.D., oversees a portfolio of grants proposing novel, integrative approaches to central nervous system and behavioral disorders. He maintains a portfolio in the areas of behavioral science, neuroscience, and complementary medicine treatments for behavioral disorders, using both natural product and mind and body approaches, such as meditation.

Prior to joining NCCAM, Dr. Glowa served as scientific review officer at the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) overseeing the review of Comparative Medicine (animal model) Clinical Translational Research Award applications. Prior to his work at NCRR, he served as a senior research advisor at Pfizer Global Research and Development. He also has extensive research experience with the Intramural Program at NIH, at both the National Institute on Mental Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. In addition, Dr. Glowa held appointments as associate professor of psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at the Louisiana State University Medical Center.

Dr. Glowa has served on a number of NIH and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs review panels and editorial boards; he continues to serve on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and as NCCAM representative to the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research.

Dr. Glowa received a B.S. in biopsychology and a Ph.D. in behavioral pharmacology from the University of Maryland.
