HIV/AIDS Assets and Strategic Focus
Strategic Focus
The CDC HIV/AIDS office in Nigeria was launched in February 2001. Since then, CDC has supported the Nigerian Ministry of Health (MoH) in its efforts to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS, treat and care those who are already infected, increase laboratory capacity, and build health infrastructure to help support a sustainable national response.
Strengthening Laboratory Systems and Networks
CDC provides technical leadership and assistance to build in-country capacity for high-quality national laboratory services and systems to assist with the rapid expansion of HIV treatment, diagnosis, and care as well as serves as the establishment of a national reference lab for TB and other diseases.
Strengthening Public Health Systems
CDC provides technical leadership and direct assistance to the MoH to strengthen epidemiology, surveillance, laboratory, blood safety, operations research, and workforce capacity—essential components for strong, sustainable public health systems.
Notable Accomplishments
CDC provides support, in conjunction with its partners, to 509 centers for PMTCT and is helping to support the government of Nigeria in expanding services to the rural areas where most women give birth.
CDC is providing ART and HIV/AIDS services to eligible patients as well as laboratory support for diagnosis and monitoring of HIV-positive patients. With CDC support, the number of people receiving antiretroviral treatment grew from 13,000 in 2004 to 367,102 by March 2011.
CDC is helping to ensure that all facilities offering ART services have co-located government TB Directly Observed Therapy Short-course (DOTS) services. These services include regular screening of all HIV-infected clients for TB.
CDC is supporting the Government of Nigeria in the deployment of a web-based District Health Information System (DHIS) 2.0, decentralization of HIV/AIDS services to primary health care level and its integrated with other health services.
CDC has supported the completion of phase II field evaluation of rapid HIV test kits for the national HIV testing algorithm and the development of the National Medical Laboratory Strategic Plan.
CDC is supporting the Government of Nigeria initiative on the establishment of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control.
