WHO and HHS/CDC Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) Generic Training Package

Couples HIV Counseling and Testing Intervention The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Department of Health and Human Services-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (HHS-CDC) have collaborated to develop the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) Generic Training Package. Recognizing that building human capacity requires collaboration at multiple levels and across organizations, the curriculum is designed to support the scale up of PMTCT services and assist in unifying and strengthening existing PMTCT training efforts.

The Training Package

The original WHO and CDC PMTCT Generic Training Package (GTP) was completed in 2004 and the first update in early 2008. The GTP is a comprehensive, evidence-based course developed for implementation in resource-limited settings. The GTP is designed to be adapted at the country or regional level to meet participant learning needs, and reflect national policy and local context. The process of adapting the curriculum for country use facilitates stakeholder input and provides a context for reviewing existing materials (policies, procedures, and curricula) in light of current science and evidence-based practice. It also provides a framework for updating existing policy, developing materials where needed, and considering the implications of implementing PMTCT services in a range of clinical settings. This curriculum also provides a mechanism for developing and sustaining human capacity building for PMTCT programmes.

Targeted Training Modules

The course is targeted to healthcare workers involved in PMTCT services in resource-constrained settings. It includes content in the following areas:

  • MODULE 1 Introduction to HIV/AIDS
  • MODULE 2 Overview of HIV Prevention in Mothers, Infants and Young Children
  • MODULE 3 Specific Interventions to Prevent MTCT of HIV
  • MODULE 4 Stigma and Discrimination Related to MTCT of HIV
