This report presents a portrait of the American Indian and Alaska Native population in the United States.1 It is part of the American Community Survey (ACS) report series. Information on demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics in the tables and figures is based on data from the 2004 ACS Selected Population Profiles and Detailed Tables.2 The data for the American Indian and Alaska Native population are based on responses to the 2004 ACS question on race, which asked all respondents to report one or more races.

This 2003 report examines federal funding of programs intended to assist Native Americans at the U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Education, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. In this report the Commission assesses the adequacy of funding provided via programs administered by these six agencies and the unmet needs that persist in Indian Country.
