World-renowned Fetal Surgeon at UM/Jackson

World-renowned fetal surgeon Rubén A. Quintero, M.D., is director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Women's Hospital Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. At University of Miami/Jackson, Dr. Quintero has launched the only fetal therapy program in Florida.

Few hospitals in the country offer these services, which can effectively treat previously untreatable, life-threatening disorders discovered in unborn babies.  Dr. Quintero is a leader in the field of fetal therapy, a subspecialty in existence since 1980. He is best known for developing a minimally invasive approach for the correction of birth defects in utero, also known as Operative Fetoscopy. He has also developed the selective laser technique to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a condition resulting from the unbalanced flow of blood between two fetuses sharing a common placenta.

After undergoing fetal surgery, infants can receive additional care after their birth at Jackson’s Holtz Children’s Hospital, known worldwide for its team of pediatric specialists experienced in treating children with all types of needs, from routine care to life-saving procedures.
