The following statement is made by the Frances Loeb Library, Harvard Graduate School of Design, which is the source of this online collection and owner of the original materials reproduced here.

The Frances Loeb Library is unaware of any copyright in the images in this collection. We encourage use of these images under the fair use clause of the 1976 Copyright Act . All images in this collection may be used for educational and scholarly purposes, but we do ask that a credit line be included with each image used (see below). Whenever possible, the Frances Loeb Library has provided in the catalog records for these materials all known information regarding the photographer or other persons associated with the lantern slide. This information is provided as a service to aid patrons in determining the appropriate use of an item, but that determination ultimately rests with the patron.

For permission to copy or use materials for commercial uses, please contact the Visual Resources Librarian of the Francis Loeb Library for further information regarding the Loeb Library's reproduction policies. The nature of historical archival photograph and slide collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine; the Harvard Graduate School of Design would like to hear from anyone who may have additional information regarding the images found in this collection.

How to Order Photographic Reproductions

Photographic copies of American Landscape and Architectural Design 1850-1920 items found in American Memory can be ordered from the Frances Loeb Library, Harvard Graduate School of Design. These reproductions (prints or transparencies) are made from high quality negatives or transparencies.

Take following steps to place an order:

  1. Take down the "TITLE" and "REPRODUCTION NUMBER" from the displayed catalog record. For this collection, the Reproduction Number is the Loeb Library's Accession Number.
  2. Contact the Visual Resources Department to place an order (telephone: 617-496-8673; fax: 617-496-5929). Orders are accepted by mail and by fax.
  3. Let us know if you prefer glossy or matte prints.
  4. Prepayment is necessary. Checks should be made payable to Harvard University
  5. Orders for prints should take 2-3 weeks to complete.
