Testimony of a Relationship

George Kovtun
Former Czechoslovak Area Specialist
European Division

Masaryk & America: Testimony of a Relationship was written by George Kovtun, a former Czechoslovak area specialist in the European Division, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Masaryk's death on September 14, 1937. Thomas G. Masaryk embodied the ties between the people of America and of the Czechoslovakia of his day, as the documentation in this work illustrates. Masaryk's own words are used, taken from speeches, articles, editorials, letters, editorials, etc., most of which are located in the collections of the Library of Congress.

The text consists of six chapters, followed by notes and a selected bibliography, while an introduction gives historical background for the documents. The materials were selected to highlight Masaryk's personal relations with America and the American people, although the distinction between personal and official matters is sometimes blurred.

The materials used in this work do not provide a full account of Masaryk's contracts with America and the Americans. Instead, the text is meant to be a reference work and an inspiration for further exploration of Masaryk and his ties to America.
