The Policy and Standards Division (PSD) of the Library of Congress plans to approve a major revision to the classification span for the Iraq War (currently DS79.76-DS79.769). The revision appears on Weekly List 5 of 2010, for discussion and approval on February 3, 2010. A link to the revised text appears below.
The revision is being undertaken because the current classification array for the war is insufficient for the volume and variety of works being published about the war. Due to this fact, many works on specific topics (e.g., cultural property, economic aspects) are being inappropriately classified in the General works number.
PSD is specially announcing this revision because it will impact the classification of works already in library collections. As is the case with most of the schedules for countries of the Middle East, there is very little space for expansion in the Iraq schedule (DS67-DS79.9). Therefore, PSD has had to repurpose some existing numbers. Libraries may want to consider reclassifying their existing collections where this occurs, and/or reclassifying works on specific topics that have been placed in the General works number.
The proposed classification array appears below. Interested parties are encouraged to consult the approved Weekly List 5, which will be made available at http://www.loc.gov/aba/cataloging/classification/weeklylists/ soon after it is finalized. The updated classification array will also be available in Classification Web within a week or ten days after its approval.
