Measuring Errors in Polygonal Representations of Surfaces

This page is under construction.

Summary:

In this project we have devised methods for measuring errors in polygonal representations of surfaces. We describe this work in detail in the paper:

J. Hagedorn, M. Olano and J. Terrill, Measuring Errors in Polygonal Representations of Surfaces, in preparation.

Surfaces are important objects of study in wildly diverse scientific disciplines, thus the depiction of surfaces and interactions with surfaces are important tasks in scientific visualization. In this context, we often (indeed, typically) work with surface models that are approximations of the true surfaces that they represent.

When the representations of surfaces are used to make decisions
or to make quantitative assessments of properties of the underlying surfaces, it is critical to understand the errors inherent in the representations. Surfaces are commonly represented in visualization systems as sets of polygons. We propose quantitative metrics for assessing how well these polygonal representations portray the underlying surfaces.
