Advanced Network Technologies Division

The Advanced Network Technologies Division works as a partner with the information technology industry to improve the quality, reliability, resilience, robustness, manageability, security, and interoperability of networked systems. As part of the nation's Metrology Laboratory, the Advanced Network Technologies Division conducts research and provides test, measurement, and quality assurance techniques, tools, models, and reference data for emerging network technologies, and develops, demonstrates, and promotes these technologies through reference implementations, test beds, guidelines, and standards.

One of our technical programs focuses on technologies for improving trustworthiness of networks. This includes:

• Internet Infrastructure Protection project to expedite the development and foster the deployment of new security technologies for protection of the Internet infrastructure; the USGv6 Profile and Testing Program are part of this effort.
  
• Public Safety Communications project to develop measurement methodologies for evaluation of technologies applicable to public safety communications; and
• Networking for Pervasive Information Technology project to assist industry in developing standards for seamless and secure mobility, and for wireless communications in healthcare.

The second focus area is to develop Measurement Science for Complex Information Systems. We are developing modeling and analysis methods to understand relationships among parameters and responses in large distributed systems, such as communications networks, computing grids, and service-oriented architectures.

The third focus area is communication networks for Smart Grid. ANTD contributes to the NIST Smart Grid activities by leading the Priority Action Plans related to networking.
