ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011 Supplemental

Dental and Oral Forensics

When the ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011 standard was being developed, the canvassees agreed to initiate work on a new record type that would handle dental and oral forensics. It was recognized that this would require a substantial amount of coordination with several groups and would therefore be issued as a Supplement to the standard when it was ready.

This document was prepared by a joint group comprised of the Forensic Dental Working Group of ANSI/NIST-ITL, co-chaired by Pedro Janices and Dr. Virginia Kanneman and by the American Dental Association Standards Committee on Dental Informatics Working Group 10.12 Forensic Odontology Informatics, chaired by Dr. Kenneth Aschheim.  This working group has held meetings in Washington, Atlanta and Buenos Aires, and has a meeting scheduled in San Francisco in October.

The ANSI/NIST-ITL working group has reached out to the American Dental Association, American Academy for Forensic Sciences, the International Association for Identification, the American Board of Forensic Odontologists, and the Scientific Working Group for Disaster Victim Identification (SWGDVI). It has held joint meeting with the American Dental Association's Informatics Standards group responsible for Specification 1058, which is forming the core of the record's structure. The ANSI/NIST-ITL Dental working group also involves leading specialists in the field of forensic odontology and medical examination. ·

XML examples and the XML schema are being developed for the current draft of the standard and will be posted as soon as they are available.

A log of the comments that have been submitted will be posted on this website periodically.

As a reminder, the week of January 28, NIST will host a workshop at the Germantown, Maryland campus that will include discussion about dental and oral forensics .
