February 2004: "And the Oscar Goes to . . . "

This month, Washington, DC, truly becomes "Hollywood on the Potomac," as the National Archives provides area filmgoers a unique opportunity to see all of the Oscar®-nominated documentaries and short subjects before the winners are announced at the 77th Academy Awards®. This exciting second program in a partnership between the Foundation for the National Archives, the Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will take place February 23–27, as we screen nominees in the Feature Documentary, Documentary Short Subject, Live Action Short Film, and Animated Short Film categories. Screenings will be free and take place in the William G. McGowan Theater.
The Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film, established in honor of four-time Oscar winner Charles Guggenheim, has as its mission the advancement of the public appreciation of documentary filmmaking. The National Archives is the natural home for the Center, as it contains one of the largest collections of nonfiction film in the world, including several documentaries and short subjects that were nominated for or won the Academy Award.
This year's nominees in the documentary categories look to be an impressive list of creative and thought-provoking films that will continue the recent nonfiction renaissance reflected in the success of films like The Fog of War, Fahrenheit 9/11, and Spellbound. But even with this surge in popularity, many of these films, especially in the shorts category, are still difficult for the public to see. The National Archives is pleased to be able to make these films available through this innovative program.
