A major disaster can strike at any time, endangering precious cultural property and leaving archival holdings vulnerable to damage and destruction in many forms.
From earthquakes to hurricanes to terrorist attacks, these disasters often cause severe and ongoing destruction in the form of water damage to cultural property, the most vulnerable being books, documents, and other paper-based materials.
A pro-active rather than re-active approach to disaster preparation is the best means we have of mitigating damage from natural disasters or other forms of destruction. To promote this pro-active approach, the National Archives offers these helpful tools to provide sound introductory information to private individuals and public institutions in preparing for either small or large scale events.
