Most of you have read about underage drinking tragedies. Many of you may know people who have been killed or injured as a result of impaired driving. Some of you might have even been involved in crashes yourselves. At the very least, you know about parties that have left your friends with hangovers, embarrassing memories and in trouble with their parents, friends or law enforcement.
Whether you believe the problems of underage drinking and impaired driving pertains to you, the fact is these problems affect everyone.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 1999 "for only the fifth time in the last 17 years, youth alcohol-related fatalities increased."
NHTSA also found that people who begin using alcohol before age 21 are more likely to be drivers in alcohol-related crashes later in life. For instance, a person who begins drinking at age 16 or 17 is four to five times more likely to become involved in an alcohol-related crash as an adult. The earlier the age of drinking onset, the study found, the greater the crash risk later in life. (NHTSA)
