Careers

There is no better legal job in America than that of Assistant U.S. Attorney. The position of an Assistant U.S. Attorney provides one with the responsibility and the authority to effect positive changes in the lives of Americans who live in Massachusetts and across the United States, whether that is through the prosecution of a drug dealer who terrorizes a local community, a civil suit against a company for failing to comply with the laws protecting disabled Americans, or the prosecution of major pharmaceutical company for cheating in the sale of drugs and devices. Effecting such positive changes is deeply satisfying; many lawyers look back on their days as an Assistant U.S. Attorney as among the most satisfying of their professional career.

Our office is one of the largest in the country with more than 100 Assistant U.S. Attorneys. We have branch offices in Springfield and Worcester. The hiring process is very competitive: we receive hundreds of applications each year for a handful of openings. We ordinarily require at least three years of exceptional experience as an attorney, as well as superior academic credentials. An important consideration in the hiring of new Assistants has been the effort to obtain a broad diversity in the overall complement of the Office. Assistants are recruited not only from large law firms, but also from backgrounds other than private practice, such as District Attorney’s and Attorney General’s offices, and other federal and state government divisions.

Another equally important priority in the recruiting and hiring of new Assistants has been to increase the number of minorities and women. The Office has and will continue to build upon its commitment to develop and maintain a dedicated and diverse staff of Assistant United States Attorneys in serving the public.

To apply, please complete the application which is located below and forward it to me with a resume and a cover letter indicating your interest in a position and, if you have a defined interest within the office, what that interest is.

The U.S. Department of Justice is an Equal Opportunity / Reasonable Accommodation Employer.
