Security Measures for Visitors to NIEHS

Since the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the NIEHS, along with other federal and private organizations, has been forced to increase security measures for our facilities. The notice and approval process prescribed below is necessary to ensure that an event does not unnecessarily increase the security risk to NIEHS, strain the NIEHS central service resources, or create a dangerous situation.

Under the current policy, security essentially requires that:

  • the purpose of a visit must be official,
  • the visit should be expected and approved by a "host" employee, and
  • visitors must show a photo ID (driver's license or one of the following: company ID, government ID, or university ID) at the campus entrance

In addition, visitors may be required to consent to a search of their vehicles. We regret the inconvenience this causes.

Tobacco-Free NIEHS

NIEHS Is Now Tobacco-Free

On July 21, 2012, as part of our efforts to improve the health of our employees and all who visit us, the NIEHS officially became tobacco-free. All federal staff, contractors and visitors should be aware that we are now tobacco-free; this includes all of campus buildings, grounds and walking trails. Please note that the use of tobacco products is not permitted in or on any NIEHS owned or leased facilities or property including privately owned vehicles while on campus.

Our goal at NIEHS is to help employees by preventing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in the workplace and promoting tobacco use cessation programs. Those who host or sponsor visitors to our campus should ensure they understand and follow the policy. Thank you for helping us keep the NIEHS campus smoke-free and a healthy environment for all who work and visit here.
